The carriage moved slowly along the paved road, away from the plains and walls of the city behind, and out towards the dirt paths and forests of nature. Like any carriage, it was drawn by a horse, but the horse was not like any other natural being. One only had to look at it to see the way the sunlight gleamed off brassed metal, and to get closer would enable one to hear the tiniest clicks and whirrs of many, many gears and springs. Occasionally the nonliving equine would exhale a cloud of steam to cool down, but otherwise it simply kept walking. I
